Fire Systems Design and Engineering Annual Conference aims to bring together experts and specialists in design against fire from all over the world to share ideas and to acquire knowledge in the field of plant, chemical, industrial, mining, processing industries, structural fire engineering and any other fire risk sectors. Practice in structural engineering increasingly accepts the benefits of performance-based approaches to the design of structures for fire resistance. This conference will focus on the application of design methods, both manual and computational, for structures to resist fire. Particularly relevant themes will be fire modelling, simulation of the heat transfer between fire and structures, and modelling of structural behaviour at elevated temperatures using numerical methods or software implementations of design codes.

Marlize’s role within the South African Power Utility Eskom has advanced over 15 years to her current key role as a Corporate Specialist in Fire System Engineering. One of her key responsibilities for Eskom’s portfolio which comprises of multiple power generating utilities and other commercial assets is to provide direction in relation to fire protection services, fire risk management and ensuring on going fire design governance is continually maintained to best industry practice within Eskom.

He has vast experience in fire disaster management which he gained when he held various position within Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department from 2002-2017.

    Dr Richard Walls (Pr. Eng., PhD, MSc, GDE, BSc.Eng., BTh) leads the Fire Engineering Research Unit at Stellenbosch University. He is a professional structural engineer who worked on heavy industrial, petrochemical and commercial projects for BSM Baker before joining Stellenbosch University in 2014. His main areas of research include structural fire design, informal settlement fire behaviour and testing, numerical modelling of buildings in fire, and the demolition of steel structures. His PhD research was focussed on developing methods to simplify rational structural fire design. He consults and lectures on various structural and fire-related topics.

    Dineo is currently employed by Fhatani Consulting Engineers as a junior mechanical engineer providing design solutions to the petrochemical industry. Part of her work involves the design of tank farm fire protection systems, design and modification of product transfer systems (pumping capacity and piping). She holds a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Cape Town. Dineo is currently doing her PhD in the civil engineering department at the University of Stellenbosch where she is conducting research in fire protection engineering, with a specific focus on fire protection of atmospheric storage tanks. This is being done under the supervision of Dr. R Walls.

    Dr Charles Kahanji is a Post-doctoral researcher in the Fire Engineering Research Unit at Stellenbosch University. He is working on the “Improving the resilience of informal settlements to fire (IRIS-Fire)” project which is a collaborative project between Stellenbosch University and Edinburgh University. He obtained his PhD from Ulster University in 2017 which focussed on the behaviour and performance of ultra-high-performance fibre reinforced concrete in fire.
